The Endo Chronicles : Packing for Surgery

By jacquie  //  The Vlogs  //  No Comments

As an endometriosis patient I have had my fair share of surgeries. The  gold standard for endometriosis treatment is excision surgery by a specialist. Out of 52,000 OBGYNs in the U.S. less than 100 of them are doing effective excision surgery. There is an incredible Facebook group “Nancy’s Nook Endometriosis discussion and education” run by former RN Nancy Petersen. The group has a list of surgeons who specialize in endo and other valuable information. The group led me to my doctor and for that I am forever grateful!

By now I know what I need to pack for surgery/after care. But many other women are in different stages in their journey. This may be very new and scary, thats where the list comes in. Of course we all have different things that work for us, but this is just what I have found to be helpful for me. Feel free to print for your convenience.

Preparing for your big day

-Make sure you go to the grocery store and stock your fridge with post-surgery food. I try to make meals that I can freeze so I won’t have to cook if I’m not up for it. Things I usually buy are frozen fruit bars, saltines, oatmeal, bread to make toast, soups, gingerale, Tylenol, Advil, Gas-X, peppermint tea, etc.

-Wash your clothes/ bedding so you have fresh sheets to slip into when you get home from the hospital. You will thank me ;).

-Have your house straighten up/ clean so you can focus on your recovery once at home.

Bowl Prep

Some surgeons require you to do a bowl prep and a clear liquid diet the day before surgery. I have found these “foods” helpful to make me feel somewhat satisfied. (Always ask your doctor whats ok for you to do. I’m not a doctor, this is just what works for me)

-Bouillon cubes for soup broth.

-Popsicles (No red or orange colored ones).

-Gummy bears (YES! You can eat these! They dissolve into liquid. But again, no red or orange).

Things to pack for the hospital (Outpatient or Inpatient)

-Phone charger (Like how I put that first? LOL)

-Pillow to hug for the car ride home. Those bumps are rough!

-Hand sanitizer

-Magazine, iPad or activity to keep busy

-Dry shampoo (If staying overnight)

-Deodorant because well, you know (If staying overnight)

Things to Pack for Your Surgery Buddy (The person who is staying with

-Book or magazine

-Notebook to take notes when doctor talks to them after your surgery.

Things to have at home (My Tried and True)

-Body pillow (AMAZING! A total game changer for recovery. I have one from Target and it’s wonderful).

-Gas-X (Ask your doctor if it’s ok for you to take).

-Pop (Some people call it soda haha) It actually is my secret weapon for gas pain!

-Peppermint tea (Helps with the gas pain)

-Ibuprofen & Tylenol (Ask your doc)

-Ice packs (I like to always have 2 so when I’m using one, the other is in the freezer ready to go. CVS brand has great ice packs)

-Heating pad (especially for your shoulders with gas pains. Rolling your shoulders forward a few times can also ease the gas pains)

-Comfy pants &Pjs

With all that said, I hope you find this helpful. Recovery is not a one size fits all by any means so be gentle with yourself. Rest is so important! I used to “be the hero” and did too much after surgery and it set back my recovery. Self-care is essential.

Be Well… XO,

5 Types of Bras Every Woman Should Own

By jacquie  //  The Vlogs  //  1 Comment

Bras…so many choices, but how many bras do you actually need? I personally have a favorite bra that I wear pretty much every day. It’s comfortable, cute and fits. I was recently cleaning out my bra & panty drawer. I realized I had so many bras that didn’t fit  and ones I didn’t need. I encourage you to go through your drawer and do the same. With Spring just around the corner it’s good to declutter and give it away to a friend. Now the types of bras you should have for any situation… Oh and by the way I am notorious for calling Victoria’s Secret Vicky’s  so now you know what I mean when I call it that.

1. “The Functional Bra”

This is your everyday bra. It may or may not be the cutest, but it works & feels great. I purposely chose a nude colored one so I don’t have to worry about it showing through my shirts. I really love Victoria’s Secret Dream Angels bras. Comfy & cute :). It’s also a good idea to get your functional bra in black as well.

2. “The Strapless”

This type of bra is wonderful for sleeveless tops/dresses, etc. It’s a huge bonus if you can get one with straps that detach. Again, going with a nude or white color will help keep it from now showing through your clothes.

3.The VaVaVOOM Push Up “

I love wearing push up bras to fill out my outfits or just give me some extra “ahh”. These are what I like to call “date night” bras. I don’t wear them daily because they can be a little much for a Starbucks run. But to each his own.. I really love The Bombshell Push Up bras from Vicky’s. It claims to add 2 cup sizes and I can confirm that yes it really does.

4. “The Racy Red”

Red is such a hot, daring color so why not wear it? Sometimes I purposely wear my red bra with a white tank top to channel my inner Gwen Stefani. It really just boosts my confidence. If you don’t own a red bra, I encourage you to go an try one on. It’s a staple in my collection.

5. “ Sports Bra”

Athletic? Then you definitely want to have a sports bra with great support. Non athletes alike still should have one. It’s great for when you don’t want to go bare, but want something holding the girls up. I’m not an expert on sports bras, but Lululemon makes some really cute ones.

This doesn’t necessarily count as a bra, but it is an option. I was thinking what do you even call these things…boob stickers? lol. But they do work when bras don’t. Stickers for know.

And lastly remember it’s important to wash your bras correctly. If at all possible put your bra in a net bag and wash with either cold or warm water on the gentle setting. After it’s washed reshape the bra if it has foam or batting in the cups.

Then let it air dry

Hope this helps you declutter for Spring. What are some of your favorite places to get bras?

Grandmother Knows Best

By jacquie  //  The Vlogs  //  No Comments

In today’s society we are constantly trying to find the next best beauty product. Retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid…I could go on with ingredients. But what if I told you you don’t have to spend a fortune for good beauty staples.

My grandma Peggy is a reputable source for maintaining the fountain of youth. She’s 90 years old and barely has a wrinkle in her face. We are an Italian family with some amazing family recipes, that I will take to the grave, but I am going to let you in on some of the family beauty secrets.

Peggy’s Beauty  Rules

1. DO NOT go to bed with makeup on. Albolene makeup remover is a staple for her. It seems like common sense, but our daily lives are tiring. This will help your skin breathe & prevent breakouts.

2. Nivea Cream. Yes that blue jar. She swears by it. Grandma always applies a “face mask” of Nivea cream before bed and awakens with the most beautiful skin.

3. “Put some lipstick on & rouge (blush). You always want to look your best and it gives you some color”<—- She uses the lipstick as cream blush.

4. She uses after bath powder to stay clean and to avoid any sweating. Jean Nate is her favorite kind.

5.  Get your beauty sleep. Your body is in repair-mode while you snooze.

Quitters never win

By jacquie  //  The Vlogs  //  No Comments

I want to do things that matter. I want everyone to be happy. I want to change for the better and let go.

I want to do things that I’m horrible at. There I said it. I want to suck so bad that look like a fool. I want to work toward something and see myself progress. This is the time to do what I need to do.

All of my life I’ve started projects, groups, sports, etc. and if I wasn’t amazing immediately, I had this overwhelming urge to just quit and run away with a hood over my head due to embarrassment and looking like a failure. Starting to play drums? If I wasn’t deemed a child  prodigy within the first month then it was time for me to put the drum sticks down. Oh..that’s not a normal thought process? I don’t know if it’s the Capricorn in me to want to always be “perfect” or just how I’ve felt all of my life.

One thing is for sure, most people aren’t naturally great when they first start something new. It takes practice, time, commitment. When I first started dancing lessons, it a challenge for me. I was always put in the first row and my teacher would say “Do it like Jacquie”. It made me feel like a star, like I wasn’t letting myself down. It did come natural to me so I stayed with it for over 12 years. When I began pointe classes my feet would bleed (normal), my legs would quiver and I would fall, I couldn’t stretch my legs just right, I couldn’t do it with such grace like the others in my class. I was humiliated and riddled with anxiety (I get bad anxiety attacks). I wasn’t as good so what did I do? I quit. To most people that sounds very abrupt and crazy, but that’s what I did. I regret it, I really do, but regret is healthy. If I didn’t regret it I wouldn’t learn. It’s good to have regrets you just have to know when to correct your actions in the future.See why it’s such a mission for me to stick something out that is WAY out of my comfort zone? I know I am a hard worker, but I think I like instant gratification and it’s also a pride thing. Letting my guard down and being vulnerable is something I struggle with, but I am working on it as we speak.

In the midst of the Christmas Eve craziness, I stopped and had a sudden feeling of happiness. Like, over the top, warm and fuzzy, full heart, brought tears to my eyes happiness. It came out of nowhere while at church, but it made me stop and think of how everything in my life at this point, no matter the past or all the stresses of the present, even with messy hair, needing a shower and a long to do list, is perfect and happier than ever. I knew at that moment if I wanted to truly rid myself of anxiety and feelings of unhappiness I needed to let go of the idea of being perfect. I needed to know that it’s ok to feel. To me that moment of clarity was the best gift I could have gotten. The gift of letting go.

I have a beautiful family and a roof over my head. What more could I need? I feel like these holidays were placed at the end of the year for a good reason. To reflect on how much happiness you have in your life before a new crazy year full of ups and downs begins. Life isn’t picture perfect, but it doesn’t have to look perfect to be perfect for you.

I have no idea what the future holds, but today I know that I am here and in the moment and for that I am so thankful. I am going on the newest adventure of my life and I am looking out the window, wind blowing, sun shining in my face clad with shades with the biggest smile knowing that the best is yet to come. Lets cheers to this.

MAC Captive Lipstick

By jacquie  //  The Vlogs  //  2 Comments

As most of you know I’m a sucker for MAC Cosmetics. I was getting a concealer at the store and saw this beautiful pinkish-plum lipstick. I swatched it on my hand and it was so creamy. I was sold! It’s a perfect color for a nighttime look and for fall. If you don’t want a color as attention-grabbing as red, but still want that “drama” then you NEED to get MAC Captive lipstick.

Finish: Satin (A very rich, creamy texture and feels like it says…satin)

Price: $16 USD

Color tip: For a wearable daytime look apply lipstick then blot 2X with tissue and for added shine apply gloss after.

Hope you all are having a great weekend! Any fun plans? Josh and I saw Lets Be Cops and it was really funny :).

Pain in the….

By jacquie  //  The Vlogs  //  No Comments

I have endometriosis as most of you know. I’m having 4 surgeries on Thursday to get myself as well as I possibly can. Many people don’t know much about this disease so I want to tell you a little about it. On most medical websites the symptoms include..

-Very painful menstrual cramps; pain may get worse over time
-Chronic severe pain in the lower back and pelvis
-Pain during or after sex
-Intestinal pain
-Painful bowel movements or painful urination during menstrual periods
-Spotting or bleeding between menstrual periods
-Infertility or not being able to get pregnant
-Diarrhea, constipation, bloating, or nausea, especially during menstrual periods

It seems not so bad right? For some women that have it, they don’t find out until they can’t get pregnant and have to have a laparoscopic procedure (that’s their only symptom). And for others we have been in pain ever since we started our menstrual cycle. My first symptoms started at age 10. I would be doubled over in pain when on my cycle and I would stay home from school for 4 days every month because I couldn’t get out of bed. Luckily the pain was only once a month back then. When I was 16 I thought my appendix was rupturing, but my tests came back normal. Doctors told me there was no way I could be in that much pain. So I suffered for years without any answers. I was diagnosed with endometriosis when I was 22. I had to beg the doctor to do it. I said I know I have it. Trust your gut! (Or stomach).

The best way I can describe what is now my daily pelvic pain is like a blister…you know the kind you get on your feet. You know that horrible feeling when the blister is raw and rubs up against something? That’s what it feels like inside of me. Like multiple raw blisters, like constant appendicitis, a gnawing pain that doesn’t let up. Endo cannot be diagnosed without a laparoscopy. It does not show up on scans. So that’s why it takes 7-10 years to get diagnosed because the symptoms mimic other illnesses and lack of knowledge in the medical community. Many people with endo don’t look sick on the outside, that’s why it’s called an invisible illness.

Also many of my family members ask me, with the best intentions..Another surgery? You’re still sick? Yes.. unfortunately there is no cure for endometriosis. However there are treatment options available, but many of them are very extreme and put you into menopause (not fun). I just wanted to raise awareness because many young women are suffering without being heard. It’s horrible. We are taught that periods hurt, it’s normal, take a Midol and get over it. Missing events, being in bed and crippled by pain is NOT normal. My other advice is to seek an endometriosis specialist who does excision (cutting) surgery and not a general OBGYN who will just burn the disease because they are not properly trained to do so. I wish I new that sooner. I went to a few basic OBGYN’s to have surgeries. It’s like having your general doctor do heart surgery on you…yes they are a doctor, but not what you need.

Please see a doctor if you feel like you could possibly have endometriosis.

Prom Makeup

By jacquie  //  The Vlogs  //  No Comments

Prom season has come to an end. When I think of my senior prom, it was such a fun night. I think of Panic! At the Disco’s song “I Write Sins Not Tragedies”, dancing with my  friends and lots of dry humping from the popular kids in which they had no problem doing in front of our principal and chaperones. I also remember me in a glitzy crazy colored gold and black sequin gown. I wouldn’t have changed a thing about what I wore, but I’ll show you my bangs…you can laugh, I am.

I don’t really remember loving the food, however I do remember wanting to get a delicious soft pretzel and chicken tenders from Sheetz after (you better believe I got them). And after that I watched Requiem for A Dream with my date.

So anyways, I had the pleasure to do the beautiful Jelissa’s makeup for prom. She wanted a dramatic winged liner with red lips. Here’s what we came up with. She loved the whole “Pin-up” look and said “I feel so beautiful wow!” As a makeup artist that’s one of the most rewarding things a client can say to you :). Her prom was being held at Gillette Stadium (a.k.a. Where the New England Patriots play). Pretty darn cool! Remember guys, if you can dream it you can do it.10363768_635875639837913_3834048582268622010_n

My Makeup Journey

By jacquie  //  The Vlogs  //  No Comments

Wow it’s been 14 years since I got into the makeup industry. I was 10 when I said “Mom I’m becoming a makeup artist, I’m Thrillergoing to do special FX makeup and glamour”. Instead of brushing it off as a phase, she said “That’s amazing! We can go to get some makeup books to help start you off”. And I said “Oh by the way, I talked to Rick Baker on the phone and he said to do makeup anywhere and everywhere and if I needed his help he would guide me”. My mom said “Who’s Rick Baker sweetie?” “Oh you know he did Michael Jackson’s Thriller and I wrote to him and he called me.” I was a weird kid. I made lots of fake blood with Corn Syrup, red & green food coloring, fake latex wounds, etc. Most of the neighbors were terrified of the “wild child”.

My whole family has always supported each other’s dreams. That’s what I love about my mom, she is a dreamer and a believer. She never made me think any of my dreams were far fetched, she just told me I had to work for them. Fair enough. My sister Wendy always wanted to be a singer/actress since she was little. Again, my mom supported her. She went to acting summer camps, did local plays, high school musicals and eventually went on to movies. Now this might sound somewhat easy to enroll your child in acting camps/classes, but my mother was a single parent with one income. She could always stretch a dollar and we never really knew how much she really struggled to put food on the table for 4 of us kids. My mom could have easily said no to us, but she did whatever possible to allow us to be successful. And for that I will always appreciate her.

Back to the makeup….I always had a little kiddy purse full of “my makeup” which consisted of different variations of glitter and lipgloss from Claires. I was only in 3rd grade , but boy did I love my makeup. My first makeup item was a Snow White powder compact from Avon. I never used it being I was so young, but I sure did love it. After my talk with Rick my mom got me a makeup kit from the drugstore, you know 10 eyeshadows, 2 blushes a few lipsticks and a mini mascara…all of which made me feel like I could concur the beauty world. I did makeup on anyone who would let me, my sisters, brother, mom, grandma, and the neighbors that weren’t afraid of my special FX makeup skills. I don’t know if they were being polite at the time, but I sure had a great time doing it.

But I wasn’t so good at doing makeup when I was in junior high, I never really wore it because I was too focused on doing it ontumblr_l76k23bJkq1qc7qvfo1_500 others. My first real time applying blush was for dance line try outs (remember that drugstore makeup kit?)…I swept this hot pink blush all over my cheeks, David Bowie would have been proud. I’m 14 and clueless because I just had no experience, but I did however, have a heavy hand. It was so horrible the other high school girls tried to help me wipe it off, but it made it even worse. Looking back it’s a funny story, but instead of worrying if I would make the dance team, I feared for my makeup career.
Fast forward.. I followed Rick’s advice, I did makeup for the drama club in HS and worked freelance and at makeup stores.

Now as I approach a new chapter in my career, I no longer care about the newest makeup products, I care about makeup application solely. I don’t want to sell makeup, I want to focus on my freelance career. And what I love is that I don’t know even half of everything about makeup. I’m always learning from others, reading and that’s what makes it interesting, that there is much more to come.

Passion cannot be taught. When you find your passion everything will fall into place. Even if you end up looking like Bowie.

March Favorites!

By jacquie  //  The Vlogs  //  No Comments
LUSH Sex Bomb ($6.65)

-This bath bomb fizzes and makes amazing bubbles in the tub. Jasmine and clary sage take your senses to a sensual, exotic escape. It smells like a sultry sweet tart in my opinion.

BLISS Fabulous Foaming Face Wash ($9-$38 depending on  size)

-By far one of my favorite cleansers. It as a sweet bubble gum like scent. It’s primary ingredient is rose hips. It has gentle exfoliating beads and removes makeup very well also. I also want to add I have very sensitive skin, so sensitive to the point that I break out in hives if I use most products. This doesn’t make me breakout and it cleans my face so well without leaving a tight, soap residue. You can get it on bliss’s website , Ulta and Sephora.

Rembrandt Whitening Strips ($22.99)
My sister got me hooked on these. They dissolve which is great and they don’t make your teeth hurt at all. The best part? They make your teeth look amazingly white. Love, love, love these! Highly recommended!
Oscar Blandi Pronto Texture and Volume Spray ($25)
I discovered this gem at a photo shoot. My makeup artist used it on me to volumize my hair that was quickly going flat. WOW. I saw my hair and it looked like sexy bed head. The smell was a heavier, natural smell, but after a few seconds I realized how much I actually liked it. The photographer even commented on how amazing it smelled. If you need some boost to your hair, pick up this puppy.
Clinique All About Eyes Rich ($30)
-This is by far the best eye cream I’ve ever used. I have dark circles and it’s very important for me to use something to help with that. This cream helps lighten and reduce puffiness under the eye area. It’s also great for sensitive skin. I also apply it before makeup and it makes concealer go on like a dream.
Brow Bar to Go by Whitening Lightening ($28)
This is such a versatile product. You can use the colors to highlight the brow bone, use as a transition color for the crease and of course for your brows. I love the colors and how the formula applies.
Urban Decay Good Karma Optical Blurring Brush ($25)
-What to say about this brush? It perfect blends in my foundation. I look like I’m airbrushed! Such a staple for me in my makeup routine!
Rimmel Scandal Eyes Eyeliner ($4.49)
-I use the black scandal eyes liner and it’s such a gorgeous dark black color. This liner is also perfect for the waterline because it actually holds the color. It’s affordable and is very comparable to the Urban Decay’s 24/7 eyeliner and Stila’s kajel liner.
Herbal Essences Drama Clean Clarifying Shampoo ($4.49)
-I believe the Drama Clean has recently been phased out and it’s now called Tea Lightfully Clean shampoo now. I know you can still get the Drama Clean online as well as some Targets and select stores. Essentially it’s just a clarifying shampoo (a weekly shampoo that gets the buildup out of hair). It smells like subtle sweet pineapple/green apple. And it works wonderfully. Did I mention it’s cheap?
Diorshow Iconic Mascara by Dior ($28.50)
-I’m not one to spend tons of money on mascara because I like drugstore ones so much and you have to toss them every 3-4 months so what’s the point of spending money and throwing it away? Well I had leftover money on a Macy’s gift card and had no clue what I wanted so I decided to splurge on this mascara. It’s a wonderful mascara with a silicone brush. It lengthens and volumizes lashes without clumps. Love it!
Stella by Stella McCartney perfume ($20-$90 depending on size)
-I got this in a sample bag and it’s just lovely. The main notes are rose, peony flower, mandarin, rose absolute and my favorite…amber. Normally I don’t like a lot of floral scents, but this one is so different. It’s subtlety sweet, romantic and mature. When I wear it I feel like it’s a beautiful summer day.
Nivea CoQ10 Body Lotion ($10)
-My mom has used this stuff forever, so naturally I liked it when I was younger because it reminded me of my mom. I recently bought it and as an adult, I still love the smell and love how soft my skin feels after using it. The best way I can describe the scent is like an expensive face cream smell. It may not be the ideal smell to most, but I know a lot of people enjoy the smell as I do. It’s just a very luxurious body emulsion without the luxury price tag.
Bath & Body Works Pure Paradise Lotion ($5-$12.50 depending on the size)
-I love to keep this in my purse. It’s not for severely dry hands, but it’s a nice tropical smelling lotion to refresh your hands during the day. It’s like my very own island escape during a cold, snowy day.
Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation ($45)
-Wowzers. Holy grail foundation status. The foundation comes out like a thick whipped lotion and it applies beautifully. I use my Urban Decay Good Karma brush and buff the foundation in using a circular motion. It provides amazing coverage, sometimes I find that I don’t even need concealer when using it. And it doesn’t budge during the day which is very important. It is pricey, but a little bit goes a long way. And this is also a great foundation for brides, it photographs brilliantly and also does not contain SPF (so flash photography won’t create a flash or “white face”).
Bath & Body Works Mahogany Teakwood Candle $20
-This is my favorite candle!!! It smells like Abercrombie Fierce cologne (aka when you walk into Abercrombie minus the obnoxiously strong smell).
Origins Modern Friction Scrub ($39.50)
-This stuff is a difference maker! You use your facial cleanser first, then the scrub. It makes your skin unbelievably smooth while it also brightens your complexion. This is one of the few products I’ve used that I’ve noticed a difference right away. I use this 2X a week to keep my skin young and glowing.
Clinique Youth Surge Night Cream ($52)
-This night cream helps to fight the signs of aging.Obviously I’m in my 20s, but it’s never too early to take care of your skin. It has Sirtuin technology to help intensify skin’s nature repair process. I love the way my skin feels in the morning after using it.
Bath and Body Works Japanese Cherry Blossom Hand Sanitizer ($1.50)
-One of my favorite B&B scents. Perfect to have in your purse for on the go!
AIM toothpaste($.99)
-It’s fresh, it’s cheap, it’s AIM!
ELF Pink Passion Blush ($3)
-This blush is comparable to MAC’s discontinued “Pink Swoon”. SO pretty. And only $3! Available online or Target.
-Soap and Glory’s The Righteous Butter ($6-$22 depending on size)
-This creamy body butter is moisturizing and smells very similar to Miss Dior perfume. I love using it after a hot shower, I feel like royalty. Treat yourself to this “righteous” butter!
